One such excursion I recently joined was a day trip to Sidmouth, a charming seaside town on the south coast of Devon. From the moment we set off, the anticipation of fresh sea air and picturesque views created a quiet buzz among the residents. The journey from Nynehead Court took us through rolling hills and past sleepy villages, each more picturesque than the last. The changing landscape, from the pastoral greens of the Somerset countryside to the dramatic cliffs and sparkling waters of the Devon coastline, was a reminder of how much beauty lies just beyond our doorstep.
As we approached Sidmouth, the sight of the sea was a welcome one. This lovely Regency town has a timeless feel, with its elegant promenade, stunning red cliffs, and the gentle ebb and flow of the waves. Our coach parked near the beach, and we all disembarked, ready to enjoy the day. The staff, as always, were attentive, offering a steady hand or friendly conversation, ensuring that each of us felt comfortable and cared for.
We began our visit with a leisurely stroll along the promenade, breathing in the fresh, salty air and taking in the sights and sounds of the sea. For some of us, the simple pleasure of sitting on a bench, watching the gulls dip and dive above the waves, was more than enough. Others, more energetic, wandered into the town itself, exploring the little shops and cafés that line the streets. I found myself drawn to a small tearoom with views of the ocean, where I indulged in a cup of tea and a slice of homemade cake, the perfect accompaniment to the peaceful surroundings.
Lunch was a delightful affair, I opted for the fish and chips, crisp and golden, with a side of tartar sauce and a generous portion of mushy peas. There is something about eating fresh fish by the sea that makes the experience all the more special, and Sidmouth certainly did not disappoint.
After lunch, we had some time to explore the town at our own pace. Some residents took the opportunity to visit the town’s beautiful Connaught Gardens, while others enjoyed a visit to the Sidmouth Museum, where they learned about the town’s history and its connections to royal and literary figures. I chose to spend my afternoon sitting by the beach, the rhythm of the waves providing a soothing backdrop to the gentle murmur of conversation and laughter around me.
As the day drew to a close, we boarded the coach and made our way back to Nynehead Court, the sun beginning its slow descent behind us. The ride home was peaceful, with many of us drifting into a contented doze, tired but happy after such a perfect day by the sea.
Another memorable excursion was a journey on the West Somerset Railway, the longest heritage railway in England. This particular trip takes us from Bishop’s Lydeard to Minehead, offering a delightful journey back in time aboard a vintage steam train. The train itself is a joy, with its polished brass fittings, plush seats, and the unmistakable smell of coal-fired steam engines—a true nostalgic treat.
We boarded the train with a sense of excitement and adventure. The gentle chugging of the engine and the rhythmic clattering of the wheels on the tracks created a comforting soundtrack as we made our way through the stunning Somerset countryside. From our windows, we watched as fields of green stretched out as far as the eye could see, punctuated by charming villages and farms. We passed a group of waving children, excited to see the old steam train pass through their village.
Not too far from Nynehead Court, our destination was Minehead, a traditional seaside town that holds a special charm with its long sandy beach and colourful beach huts. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the sea breeze and a delightful view of the town’s sweeping bay. We enjoyed a leisurely lunch at a beachfront café before taking some time to explore the area. Some residents wandered through the town’s quaint streets, while others chose to simply relax on the beach, soaking in the sunshine.
For me, the highlight of the day was the train journey itself—there’s something wonderfully nostalgic about travelling by steam. It felt like a step back in time, and I found myself reminiscing about the days when this mode of transport was commonplace. The journey back to Nynehead Court was as enjoyable as the outward trip, with the sun setting over the fields and casting a golden glow over the landscape.
