Celebrating 33 Years of Dedication: Sheila Welch Retires from Nynehead Court
After an incredible 33 years of service, Sheila Welch, one of Nynehead Court’s longest-serving and most cherished staff members, is stepping into retirement. Her journey with Nynehead Court is a testament to dedication, compassion, and the enduring spirit of care that defines our community. As Sheila bids farewell, we take a moment to celebrate her remarkable contributions, relive some of her favourite memories, and reflect on the invaluable impact she has had on both residents and colleagues alike.
When asked what inspired her to choose a career in care work, Sheila explained it wasn’t just a job—it was a calling. Over the years, this ethos became her guiding principle. “Nynehead is a family, not a job,” she says. This belief carried her through long winters, unexpected floods, and even snowy lockdowns, when she stayed onsite for days at a time to ensure residents were safe, comfortable, and cared for.
Sheila’s approach to caregiving is beautifully simple yet profound: “Treat residents as though they’re your grandparents. Take the time to sit with them, read with them, and make them feel seen and valued.” It’s this philosophy that has earned her the admiration and respect of everyone at Nynehead Court.
Over the decades, Sheila has witnessed the transformation of Nynehead Court and the care industry as a whole. From its origins as a home for the wealthy with ties to the Queen Mother and visits from Princess Margaret, to the warm, inclusive community it is today, Nynehead Court has grown alongside its residents.
For Sheila, the stories of the residents have been among the most inspiring parts of her journey. From tales of daring parachute jumps behind enemy lines during World War I to the quieter reflections of everyday life, she has been privy to countless moments of courage, humour, and grace.
One particularly fond memory is the camaraderie among staff and residents when the home faced challenges, such as weathering severe floods. “There was always enough food, drink, and a sense of togetherness to keep us going,” she recalls with a smile.
Sheila has seen many changes in her 33 years, from the shift toward domiciliary care to the advancements in technology and processes within the care industry. But one thing that hasn’t changed is Nynehead Court’s commitment to exemplary care.
“The quality of care here has never been about conveyor belt routines,” Sheila explains. “If someone needs an hour to get ready, that’s what they get. It’s about treating people with dignity and respect, just as you would want for your own family.”
Her admiration for the team’s dedication remains unwavering. “Management always has your back, and we don’t rely on agency staff. That tight-knit community was crucial during COVID-19, and we’re proud to say we didn’t lose anyone during that time.”
As Sheila steps into retirement, she leaves behind not just a legacy of care but a profound sense of community. “You’re my second family,” she recently told a resident. And although she’s leaving, Sheila assures us that she won’t be a stranger. “They won’t get rid of me that easily,” she laughs. Sheila plans to stay involved in Nynehead Court’s community events and has already committed to returning for the spring fete.
