As the cooler air settles in and the days grow shorter, the gardens at Nynehead Court, a significant part of our beautiful care home in Somerset, begin to transform, offering one of the most spectacular displays of the year. For us, autumn is a season of beauty and change, when the trees put on their final performance before the winter sets in, and the grounds are filled with the vibrant colours of the season. Our Head Gardener Justin, often refers to this time as the garden’s “grand finale,” and it’s easy to see why.
The trees throughout our gardens are currently awash with a stunning array of colours. Golden yellows, fiery reds, and bright oranges are emerging by the day, creating a breathtaking backdrop that our residents and visitors alike adore. The entire garden seems to glow under the early autumn sunlight, and there’s something about the way the leaves shimmer in the crisp breeze that makes this time of year truly magical.
We always encourage residents and visitors to take a stroll through the grounds during this season. There’s nothing quite like walking through the garden with the crunch of newly fallen leaves underfoot, soaking in the peaceful beauty that surrounds you. And of course, if you’re planning to visit, don’t forget to bring a bag to gather some of our lovely sweet chestnuts! The trees are full of them right now, and you’re welcome to take some home—just be sure to get there before the squirrels do!
An Autumn Tradition: The Halloween Trail
One of the most anticipated events of the season at Nynehead Court is our Halloween trail. Every year, we welcome children from the local community into our gardens for a spooky adventure, and it’s always a joy to see how much fun they have. The excitement in the air is palpable as they make their way along the trail, solving riddles and discovering hidden treasures amongst the trees and flowerbeds.
For our residents, the Halloween trail is a chance to see the garden through the eyes of the young, and many of them delight in watching the children’s reactions as they explore the grounds. It’s heartwarming to see the generations come together in this way, and there’s always a sense of community and connection that fills the air. We love seeing both our residents and the young visitors enjoy themselves as they wander through the gardens, with pumpkins, witches’ hats, and the occasional ghost peeking out from behind a tree!
Leaves Underfoot and the Wonders of Nature
As autumn progresses, one of the most noticeable changes in the garden is the abundance of fallen leaves. With the many varieties of trees we have here at Nynehead Court, each with its own distinct leaf shape, size, and colour, the ground becomes a tapestry of nature’s artistry. Walking through the gardens at this time of year is like stepping into a storybook, with every leaf adding its own unique touch to the scene.
Justin often remarks that some of these leaves are worth taking a closer look at, and we couldn’t agree more. Each one tells the story of the tree it fell from, and the diversity of leaves in our gardens is truly something special. Whether it’s the large, broad leaves of the sycamore or the delicate, feathery foliage of the Japanese maple, there’s always something new and fascinating to discover.
Preparing for Spring: The Work of a Gardener
While autumn is a time of reflection and appreciation for the beauty around us, it’s also a busy time in the gardens as we prepare for the seasons ahead. Our team of gardeners has one last big job to do before the colder weather sets in: removing the summer bedding plants and planting out the spring bedding, including bulbs that will bring colour and life to the gardens when winter finally gives way to spring.
It’s a reminder that in gardening, we’re always thinking ahead. While we enjoy the current beauty of the garden, we’re already looking forward to the bursts of colour that will appear in the spring. The bulbs we plant now—tulips, daffodils, crocuses—will lay dormant through the winter, waiting for the first hint of warmth to bloom into their full glory. It’s this cycle of nature that keeps our gardens vibrant and ever-changing throughout the year, and it’s something we never tire of.
